Why Italian authorities require this.

A Florida-issued birth certificate heading to Italy needs to be authenticated through the apostille process before Italian authorities will accept it. The apostille is the international standard set by the 1961 Hague Convention for authenticating foreign documents — and Italy has been a member since 1978, so the Florida apostille is the only authentication required (no consular legalization).

The Florida Department of State in Tallahassee is the only authority that can apostille a Florida-issued birth certificate. The state's standard mail-in processing time is 5–7 weeks. Our service walks every document in person to the FL DOS apostille counter — 5–7 business days from the moment we receive your birth certificate.

For Italy-bound submissions specifically, additional requirements apply beyond the apostille itself. See the next section for Italian-specific requirements — translation, document freshness, consular submission — that often catch applicants by surprise.

Beyond the apostille — Italy's rules.

Italy is a Hague Convention member since 1978, so a Florida apostille is the only authentication required — no consular legalization needed. However, Italy has additional requirements that catch many applicants by surprise: certified Italian translation is required for every document, and the translation must be done by an authorized Italian translator after the apostille is applied. The translation itself may also need to be authenticated (often through the same consulate that processes the application).

Italian consulates also enforce document freshness rules: birth, marriage, death, and divorce certificates older than six months are typically rejected and must be re-ordered fresh. FDLE background checks must be dated within three to six months of submission. Plan the apostille timeline around the consulate's freshness window, not the other way around.

Common Italian situations where this applies.

These are the most common Italy-bound document situations we see.

Jure Sanguinis Citizenship

Italian citizenship by descent — apostilled birth, marriage, death certificates for every ancestor in the direct line. Most applications involve 3–6 ancestor records.

Marriage in Italy

Italian marriage licenses require apostilled birth certificates, single-status affidavits, and (if applicable) divorce decrees for both partners.

Italian Residency (Permesso di Soggiorno)

Apostilled FBI/FDLE background checks, birth certificates, and proof of income are standard for elective residency and digital nomad visa applications.

Italian Property Purchase

Notarized, apostilled powers of attorney for Italian closings — handled in Italian by a local notary (notaio).

Italian University Enrollment

Universities in Italy require apostilled diplomas and transcripts, often with certified Italian translation.

Italian Work Permit

Italian employers require apostilled background checks and credential documents as part of the residency-for-work track.

Pick the way that fits your life.

All three options end the same way — your apostilled documents back in your hands in 5–7 business days, filed in person at the Florida Department of State.

Common questions.

Yes — Italian consulates require a certified Italian translation of every apostilled document, prepared by an authorized translator. The translation is done after the apostille is applied. We can recommend Italian translators who handle jure sanguinis packages regularly.
Italian consulates typically reject vital records older than six months from the date of issue. Order a fresh certified copy from the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics if your existing copy is older. This is the #1 documentation timing trap for Italian applications.
The Italian Consulate General is in Miami at 1200 Brickell Bay Drive, Suite 720. They also have a satellite presence in Coral Gables. Coverage zone includes all of Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas.
Typically 2–6 certificates: your birth certificate, your Italian ancestor's birth certificate, plus marriage and death certificates linking the chain of descent. Bundle pricing applies — $300 for 2, $130 each for 3+. Italian consulates do not negotiate which documents — every link in the chain must be present.
