Why Spanish authorities require this.

A Florida-issued florida-issued document heading to Spain needs to be authenticated through the apostille process before Spanish authorities will accept it. The apostille is the international standard set by the 1961 Hague Convention for authenticating foreign documents — and Spain has been a member since 1978, so the Florida apostille is the only authentication required (no consular legalization).

The Florida Department of State in Tallahassee is the only authority that can apostille a Florida-issued florida-issued document. The state's standard mail-in processing time is 5–7 weeks. Our service walks every document in person to the FL DOS apostille counter — 5–7 business days from the moment we receive your florida-issued document.

For Spain-bound submissions specifically, additional requirements apply beyond the apostille itself. See the next section for Spanish-specific requirements — translation, document freshness, consular submission — that often catch applicants by surprise.

Beyond the apostille — Spain's rules.

Spain is a Hague Convention member since 1978, so a Florida apostille is the required authentication. Spanish authorities accept English-language U.S. documents with the apostille — no translation needed if the document is already in Spanish (e.g., Florida documents from Hispanic counties sometimes have bilingual issuance). For English-only documents, the Spanish Consulate may require an official translation by a Spanish sworn translator (traductor jurado).

For the non-lucrative visa, the Spanish Consulate in Miami requires an apostilled FBI background check (not just FDLE — the federal-level check), apostilled marriage certificates if applicable, and apostilled medical certificates. Documents must be dated within three months for visa applications. The digital nomad visa has similar requirements with somewhat more flexible income proof.

Common Spanish situations where this applies.

These are the most common Spain-bound document situations we see.

Non-Lucrative Visa (Visado No Lucrativo)

Retirement residency in Spain — apostilled FBI background check (not FDLE alone), marriage certificate, and medical certificate dated within three months.

Digital Nomad Visa

For remote workers and freelancers — apostilled background check, employment letters, and (if married) marriage certificate.

Marriage in Spain

Spanish registros civiles require apostilled birth certificates and single-status declarations.

Spanish Citizenship by Descent

Sephardic Jewish ancestry program and citizenship claims through Spanish-citizen parents require apostilled documentation.

Spanish School Enrollment

International schools and Spanish universities require apostilled diplomas and transcripts.

Property Purchase in Spain

Spanish notaries (notarios) require apostilled, notarized powers of attorney if the buyer cannot attend the closing.

Pick the way that fits your life.

All three options end the same way — your apostilled documents back in your hands in 5–7 business days, filed in person at the Florida Department of State.

Common questions.

Spanish authorities accept English-language U.S. documents with the apostille for most purposes. However, the Spanish Consulate may require an official translation by a traductor jurado (sworn translator certified in Spain) for visa applications. Florida-based Spanish translators are generally not the same as traductores jurados — confirm before paying.
The Spanish Consulate in Miami requires most documents (FBI background check, medical certificate) to be dated within three months of submission. Plan the apostille timeline accordingly — don't apostille documents months ahead of your visa appointment.
The Spanish Consulate General is in Miami at 2655 Le Jeune Road, Suite 203 (Coral Gables area). There's also a Spanish Consulate in Tampa. Coverage includes Florida.
The Spanish Consulate typically requires the FBI Identity History Summary (federal background check) for the non-lucrative visa, not the FDLE check alone. The FBI check is processed by the U.S. Department of State for apostille — not the Florida Department of State. We can guide the FBI route but we apostille only Florida-issued documents.
