Why Floridians apostille documents for Portugal.

Portugal has become one of the most popular European retirement and citizenship destinations for Floridians, driven by the D7 visa (passive income), the D8 digital nomad visa, and (historically) the Golden Visa investment program. The Portuguese citizenship-by-descent program for Sephardic Jewish ancestors brought additional Florida demand, though Portugal closed that program in 2024.

Portuguese authorities require apostilled and translated U.S. documents for all visa applications, marriage in Portugal, citizenship claims by marriage or descent, and property purchases. Lisbon and Porto have active real estate markets that draw U.S. buyers, and the apostille step is a routine part of those closings.

What Portuguese authorities actually require.

Portugal is a Hague Convention member since 1968, so a Florida apostille is the required authentication. Certified Portuguese translation is required for most submissions, performed by a translator certified by a Portuguese consulate, court, or notary. Translation is done after the apostille is applied.

The D7 visa requires apostilled FBI background checks, apostilled birth and marriage certificates (where applicable), and proof of passive income (rental, dividends, pension) sufficient to support the applicant. The Portuguese SEF (immigration service) and consulate are particular about document freshness — vital records dated within six months, FBI checks within three months.

Portugal-specific questions.

Yes. Portuguese authorities typically require certified Portuguese translation, performed by a translator certified by a Portuguese consulate, court, or notary. Florida-based Portuguese translators are generally not equivalent. Translation is performed after the apostille is applied.
The Portuguese consulate typically requires vital records (birth, marriage) dated within six months, and FBI/FDLE background checks dated within three months. Plan the apostille timeline accordingly — fresh certified copies cost $9–$15 each from the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Florida is covered by the Portuguese Consulate in Atlanta (310 Peachtree Street NE, Suite 1620), not a full consulate in Miami. There's an honorary consul in Miami for routine matters, but visa applications and most consular services go through Atlanta. Plan travel or mailing accordingly.
Portugal closed the Sephardic Jewish ancestry citizenship program in 2024 — new applications are no longer being accepted. Applications filed before the deadline are still being processed. Confirm current status with a Portuguese immigration attorney before starting any new citizenship application.
