How a Florida court records is used in Portugal

Florida judgments, such as custody orders, support orders and money judgments, generally take effect in Portugal only after revisão e confirmação by a Tribunal da Relação. The court checks that the judgment is authentic and final and that basic defense rights were respected. A Portuguese lawyer files the request with a complete copy certified by the Clerk of Court, plus proof of finality where available, all apostilled. Ask whether the court wants a Portuguese translation, because courts are less flexible about English than civil registries.

Getting a court records Florida will apostille

A complete copy certified by the Florida Clerk of Court, either with an original wet-ink certification and the clerk's seal or with the clerk's official e-certification, including the judge's signature page and with nothing removed or added. The state fee is $20 ($10 apostille + $10 certificate of incumbency), included in our price.

Order the certified copy from the clerk of the county where the case was filed, online, by mail or at the courthouse. Florida law sets the clerk's certification fee at $2 plus copy charges, usually $1 per page, and some clerks add online fees. Sealed or confidential records need the clerk's release. Clerk fees are not included in our $220.

State fee for this document: $20 — included in our price. Full details on the court records apostille page.

Who receives it in Portugal — and translation

The Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado (IRN) and its Conservatória dos Registos Centrais in Lisbon handle nationality and the transcription of births, marriages and deaths of Portuguese citizens abroad. AIMA, the Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo, which replaced SEF in October 2023, handles residence permits. DGES and public universities recognize degrees, Tribunais da Relação review foreign judgments, and the RNPC issues numbers to foreign companies. Florida is served by the Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal in Washington, D.C.

Our general rule is a translation certified by the translator, notarized by a separate notary and apostilled in Florida, but for Portugal you often need no translation at all. Civil registries can waive it for English, French or Spanish documents when the official knows the language (book ahead), and IRN nationality forms and DGES do the same. When Portugal does require one, the IRN expects it certified in Portugal by a notary, registry officer, lawyer, solicitador or recognized chamber of commerce, or by a Portuguese consulate in the issuing country.

Portugal doesn't publish one age limit for every foreign document; ask the conservatória, AIMA or the consulate. Criminal records are the most time-sensitive, and nationality files filed after May 19, 2026 follow the new law, while files pending on that date keep the old rules.

Common questions

Through revisão e confirmação by a Portuguese Tribunal da Relação, filed by a lawyer. Prepare Clerk-certified, apostilled copies of the judgment and proof that it's final, and ask about translation.
No. It authenticates the clerk's certification. Recognition or enforcement is decided by the foreign court under its own law.
One per country or institution, since foreign offices usually keep the copy. Some banks want probate letters certified recently, so ask before you order. Three or more apostilles are $160 each.
Yes. Choose international return at checkout: a flat $100 per order, tracked international shipping to any address in Portugal. Shipping inside the U.S. is included.
Not on the U.S. side — no embassy or consulate legalization. Portugal may still ask for a translation; as a rule it should be certified by the translator, notarized and apostilled too.
