Quick answer

Brazilian consulates and the Polícia Federal check original passports, so an apostilled copy matters only when someone acts for you. One Florida apostille is all the U.S. side needs — $220, 5–7 business days.

How a Florida passport copy is used in Brazil

Brazilian consulates and the Polícia Federal check original passports, so an apostilled copy matters only when someone acts for you. The typical case is a cartório de notas or Brazilian bank dealing with your attorney-in-fact, which wants an authenticated copy of your passport alongside the procuração. A Florida notary can make an attested copy of the passport, and we apostille it. The copy is short, so the public translator's work is small, but don't skip it if the cartório asks. Ask first whether they want every page or only the data page.

Getting a passport copy Florida will apostille

A clear copy of the photo page (and any other pages requested) with a complete Florida certificate in English: the attested-copy certificate, or a jurat on your sworn statement. A stamp and signature with no wording, or a copy notarized in another state, will not work.

Present your passport to a Florida notary for an attested copy (an individual notary may decline), or sign a sworn statement before any Florida notary or through our online notarization add-on: $40 for the first document ($10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee) and $20 for each additional document. Never mail your passport. Notarization is not included in our $220.

State fee for this document: $10 — included in our price. Full details on the passport copy apostille page.

Who receives it in Brazil — and translation

Cartórios de registro civil transcribe foreign births, marriages and deaths under CNJ Resolution 155/2012, and cartórios de notas use powers of attorney and handle many inventários. Brazilian consulates in the U.S. register births and issue CPF numbers for foreigners abroad. The Superior Tribunal de Justiça homologates foreign judgments, public universities revalidate degrees, the Polícia Federal handles migration, and the Receita Federal and state Juntas Comerciais deal with companies.

Our general rule for translations is certified by the translator, notarized by a separate notary and apostilled in Florida, but Brazil instead requires its own public translators. Under Law 14.195/2021, only a tradutor e intérprete público registered with a Brazilian Junta Comercial gives a translation public faith in Brazil, and the original-language document must accompany it. Apostille in Florida first, then have a Brazilian public translator translate the apostilled original, and ask whether the apostille page must be translated too.

Brazil has no single age limit for foreign documents, but cartórios, banks and registries often want recent certificates, especially certificates of status and criminal records. Order fresh copies shortly before filing; old consular legalizations from before August 2016 are no longer accepted in place of an apostille.

  • Incomplete certificate: missing county, date, ID type or presence box
  • Illegible copy, including the machine-readable lines

What it costs for Brazil

$220 per document, $380 for two and $160 each for three or more — the state fee, request form, in-person filing in Tallahassee and FedEx shipping inside the U.S. are included. Shipping the finished apostille to Brazil is a flat $100 per order.

Not included: whatever the issuing office charges for the certified copy or certificate, and notarization (online notarization is $40 for the first document — $10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee — and $20 for each additional one).

Common questions

Usually to match your identity to a procuração when an attorney-in-fact signs for you. A Florida notary attests the copy, we apostille it, and the cartório may ask for a sworn translation.
No. Never mail your passport. We only need the notarized copy, and with online notarization there is nothing to ship.
On the notarized copy. It confirms the Florida notary's signature and commission, which is what lets the foreign bank or registry rely on the copy.
Yes. Choose international return at checkout: a flat $100 per order, tracked international shipping to any address in Brazil. Shipping inside the U.S. is included.
Not on the U.S. side — no embassy or consulate legalization. Brazil may still ask for a translation; as a rule it should be certified by the translator, notarized and apostilled too.
