How a Florida driver's license copy is used in Germany

This is unusual for Germany. Exchanging a Florida license for a German one at the local licensing office (Führerscheinstelle) is done with the original license and usually a translation, so an apostilled copy won't help there. A certified copy occasionally serves as secondary proof of identity or U.S. address, for example in a German bank's identity check or a citizenship file. A Florida notary makes the attested copy, and we apostille it. Ask first whether a passport copy would serve the same purpose.

Getting a driver's license copy Florida will apostille

A front-and-back copy of your current license attached to your sworn statement, signed in front of a Florida notary who completes a jurat. If the foreign office wants your driving history instead, it needs FLHSMV's certified record, unaltered. The plastic card itself can't be apostilled.

Sign the sworn statement before any Florida notary or through our online notarization add-on: $40 for the first document ($10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee) and $20 for each additional document. For a certified driving record, order from FLHSMV online or with form HSMV 90511, which lists $10 and about two weeks of processing. Notarization and FLHSMV fees are not included in our $220.

State fee for this document: $10 — included in our price. Full details on the driver's license copy apostille page.

Who receives it in Germany — and translation

The registrar's office (Standesamt) handles marriages, birth registrations and name declarations; births of children who never lived in Germany go to Standesamt I in Berlin. State justice departments recognize foreign divorces, probate courts (Nachlassgerichte) issue certificates of inheritance, and German notaries and land registries handle property. Recognition of qualifications runs through state authorities and the ZAB. The Consulate General of Germany in Miami serves Florida.

German offices that require a translation usually want one by a translator sworn, publicly appointed or authorized under German state law, searchable in the state justice administrations' database. Our general rule is a translation certified by the translator, notarized by a separate notary and apostilled in Florida; some German offices accept it, but many will instead require a sworn German translator. For recognition of a Florida divorce, plan on the apostille plus a sworn German translation. Translate after the apostille, including the apostille page.

To marry in Germany, the birth certificate must not be older than six months. Other offices set their own limits, so ask; German notaries and register courts also tend to reject corporate certificates that are several months old.

  • Statement signed before the notary session
  • Notarized in another state
  • Uncertified driving record printout

What it costs for Germany

$220 per document, $380 for two and $160 each for three or more — the state fee, request form, in-person filing in Tallahassee and FedEx shipping inside the U.S. are included. Shipping the finished apostille to Germany is a flat $100 per order.

Not included: whatever the issuing office charges for the certified copy or certificate, and notarization (online notarization is $40 for the first document — $10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee — and $20 for each additional one).

Common questions

Generally no. License exchanges work from the original license. An attested, apostilled copy only helps as supporting identity proof.
Florida notaries can only attest copies of documents that aren't public records certifiable by an official source, and FLHSMV certifies license records. Your sworn statement about the copy avoids that problem.
A certified driving record from FLHSMV: 3-year, 7-year or complete. It is a state agency document and can be apostilled as issued.
Yes. Choose international return at checkout: a flat $100 per order, tracked international shipping to any address in Germany. Shipping inside the U.S. is included.
Not on the U.S. side — no embassy or consulate legalization. Germany may still ask for a translation; as a rule it should be certified by the translator, notarized and apostilled too.
