Quick answer

Bank statements are central to Italy's elective residence visa, which Florida retirees request from the Consulate General of Italy in Miami, because it requires proof of stable passive income. One Florida apostille is all the U.S. side needs — $220, 5–7 business days.

How a Florida bank statement is used in Italy

Bank statements are central to Italy's elective residence visa, which Florida retirees request from the Consulate General of Italy in Miami, because it requires proof of stable passive income. The consulate sets the format, and statements are usually filed as they are, without an apostille. Apostilled bank documents come up later, for example when an Italian notaio, bank or court wants authenticated proof. A printout can't be apostilled; use a bank officer's letter signed before a notary, or the statement with your notarized true-copy affidavit.

Getting a bank statement Florida will apostille

The statement or bank letter must carry a complete Florida notarial certificate: a bank officer's signature acknowledged in a representative capacity (or sworn), a Florida attested-copy certificate, or a jurat on your sworn statement with the statement attached. Every page must be included, and the notary must be commissioned in Florida.

Ask your branch for a reference letter signed before a Florida notary, or use the attested-copy or sworn-statement route, both of which can be done through our online notarization add-on: $40 for the first document ($10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee) and $20 for each additional document. Bank fees and notarization are not included in our $220.

State fee for this document: $10 — included in our price. Full details on the bank statement apostille page.

Who receives it in Italy — and translation

The Consulate General of Italy in Miami handles citizenship by descent and transcription of Florida births, marriages and divorces into the comune's civil records; applicants must live in its district. Citizenship by marriage is filed online with the Ministry of the Interior. Italian notai use powers of attorney and handle property and inheritances, the Agenzia delle Entrate receives inheritance declarations, and universities and CIMEA assess foreign degrees. Since Law 74/2025, citizenship-by-descent applications filed after March 27, 2025 face much narrower eligibility — confirm you qualify before preparing documents.

Italian offices need an official Italian translation of English records, and the Miami consulate states that it does not translate documents. Our general rule is a translation certified by the translator, notarized by a separate Florida notary and apostilled; ask the consulate whether it accepts that format or certifies translations itself. Courts and some comuni in Italy may instead require a translation sworn before an Italian court (asseverata). Translate after the apostille, including the apostille page.

Criminal-record certificates for citizenship by marriage are valid for six months from issue and must still be valid when you file. For descent files, the consulate wants every document in original in one complete submission, so order fresh vital records close to your appointment.

Why bank statements get rejected

  • Medallion signature guarantee instead of a notarization
  • Letter notarized at an out-of-state bank office
  • Pages missing, or added after notarization
  • Statement older than the consulate's cutoff

What it costs for Italy

$220 per document, $380 for two and $160 each for three or more — the state fee, request form, in-person filing in Tallahassee and FedEx shipping inside the U.S. are included. Shipping the finished apostille to Italy is a flat $100 per order.

Not included: whatever the issuing office charges for the certified copy or certificate, and notarization (online notarization is $40 for the first document — $10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee — and $20 for each additional one).

Common questions

Usually not; follow the Miami consulate's checklist, which sets the format. If an Italian office later wants authenticated proof, a bank officer's notarized letter can be apostilled.
No. A signature guarantee is a banking stamp for securities transfers, not a notarial act, and the Florida Department of State won't apostille it.
If the statements are combined into one notarized document, it's one apostille. Separate notarizations are separate documents, so ask us before you notarize.
Yes. Choose international return at checkout: a flat $100 per order, tracked international shipping to any address in Italy. Shipping inside the U.S. is included.
Not on the U.S. side — no embassy or consulate legalization. Italy may still ask for a translation; as a rule it should be certified by the translator, notarized and apostilled too.
