How a Florida passport copy is used in Mexico

In Mexico, a notario identifies you from your original passport when you appear, so a certified passport copy is rarely needed. It comes up when you won't be there: a Mexican bank opening an account remotely, a lawyer filing on your behalf, or a fideicomiso trustee updating its file. A Florida notary can attest a photocopy of a document that isn't a public record, and that attested copy can then be apostilled. Ask first whether the Mexican office accepts a notarized copy at all, or insists on the original or a consular certification.

Getting a passport copy Florida will apostille

A clear copy of the photo page (and any other pages requested) with a complete Florida certificate in English: the attested-copy certificate, or a jurat on your sworn statement. A stamp and signature with no wording, or a copy notarized in another state, will not work.

Present your passport to a Florida notary for an attested copy (an individual notary may decline), or sign a sworn statement before any Florida notary or through our online notarization add-on: $40 for the first document ($10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee) and $20 for each additional document. Never mail your passport. Notarization is not included in our $220.

State fee for this document: $10 — included in our price. Full details on the passport copy apostille page.

Who receives it in Mexico — and translation

In Mexico, Florida documents go to the Registro Civil of each state (inserción de actas extranjeras), notarios públicos (property, fideicomisos, sucesiones, companies), family courts, the SEP (revalidación de estudios) and the National Migration Institute (INM). In the U.S., the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami registers births for Mexican nationality, grants poderes notariales and issues residence visas; its checklists generally require apostille and translation only for documents issued in a third country.

Our general rule is a translation certified by the translator, notarized by a different notary and apostilled in Florida. Mexico is the big exception: notarios, courts and Registros Civiles usually require a perito traductor authorized by a state Tribunal Superior de Justicia instead, done in Mexico after the apostille. Mexican consulates in the U.S. generally don't ask for a translation of English documents, and SEP revalidation accepts a simple translation.

Mexico has no single national expiry for apostilled documents; each notario, registry or consulate sets its own. Many want civil-status records and company certificates recently issued, so order fresh certified copies shortly before you send them to us.

  • Stamp and signature only, with no certificate wording
  • Copy notarized in another state
  • Incomplete certificate: missing county, date, ID type or presence box
  • Illegible copy, including the machine-readable lines

What it costs for Mexico

$220 per document, $380 for two and $160 each for three or more — the state fee, request form, in-person filing in Tallahassee and FedEx shipping inside the U.S. are included. Shipping the finished apostille to Mexico is a flat $100 per order.

Not included: whatever the issuing office charges for the certified copy or certificate, and notarization (online notarization is $40 for the first document — $10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee — and $20 for each additional one).

Common questions

Not for signing a deed: the notario must identify the people who sign before it. A certified copy helps for files handled by a representative under a power of attorney.
No. Never mail your passport. We only need the notarized copy, and with online notarization there is nothing to ship.
On the notarized copy. It confirms the Florida notary's signature and commission, which is what lets the foreign bank or registry rely on the copy.
Yes. Choose international return at checkout: a flat $100 per order, tracked international shipping to any address in Mexico. Shipping inside the U.S. is included.
Not on the U.S. side — no embassy or consulate legalization. Mexico may still ask for a translation; as a rule it should be certified by the translator, notarized and apostilled too.
