How a Florida divorce decree is used in Nigeria

A Florida divorce is needed in Nigeria for remarriage, to correct marital status on records, and in disputes over land or a house acquired during the marriage. Nigerian courts may ask whether a foreign divorce is final, so use the Clerk-certified final judgment of dissolution, not the petition. Order it from the Clerk of Court in the county that granted it; the state fee is $20 because of the Clerk's certificate.

Getting a divorce decree Florida will authenticate

A complete copy of the final judgment of dissolution of marriage, certified by the Clerk of Court with an original wet-ink certification or the clerk's official e-certification. The state fee is $20 ($10 apostille + $10 certificate of incumbency), already in our price. If the receiving country accepts the one-page dissolution certificate instead, it must be signed by the State Registrar or a Clerk of the County Court and certified in 2014 or later.

Request a certified copy of the final judgment from the clerk of the county where the divorce was granted, online, by mail or at the courthouse; Florida law sets the clerk's certification fee at $2 plus copy charges, usually $1 per page. The dissolution certificate (divorces from June 6, 1927 on) can be ordered from the Bureau of Vital Statistics or through VitalChek. These fees are not included in our $220.

What happens after the Florida certificate — Nigeria

After we return your document with its Florida authentication certificate, the usual next step is authentication by the U.S. Department of State, followed by legalization by Nigeria's consular office: the Consulate General of Nigeria in Atlanta serves Florida, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, D.C. also has a consular section. Confirm the current requirements with the Nigerian office before you send anything. We don't handle, arrange or refer anyone for the federal or Nigerian steps.

Who receives it in Nigeria — and translation

Florida is served by the Consulate General of Nigeria in Atlanta, whose published jurisdiction includes Florida; the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, D.C. also has a consular section. In Nigeria, Florida documents go to the Nigeria Immigration Service, state probate registries and courts for estates, state lands registries for property, the Corporate Affairs Commission and investment authorities for companies, and employers, universities and professional regulators.

English is Nigeria's official language, so Florida documents in English normally need no translation. If a Florida document is in another language, for example a Spanish-language record or a foreign certificate attached to a Florida affidavit, have it translated into English, certified by the translator, notarized by a different notary and authenticated in Florida along with the original.

We found no published Nigerian rule on document age for these documents. Ask the receiving office, especially for police records and bank statements, which are usually expected to be recent.

  • Divorce granted in another state

What it costs for Nigeria

$220 per document, $380 for two and $160 each for three or more — the state fee, request form, in-person filing in Tallahassee and FedEx shipping inside the U.S. are included. Shipping the finished authentication to Nigeria is a flat $100 per order.

Not included: whatever the issuing office charges for the certified copy or certificate, and notarization (online notarization is $40 for the first document — $10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee — and $20 for each additional one).

Common questions

The final judgment of dissolution, certified by the Clerk of Court, then authenticated and legalized.
The decree is the full court judgment; the certificate is a one-page vital record that summarizes it. For remarriage or civil-status updates abroad, many authorities want the full judgment, so ask the receiving office before you order.
Documents certified by a Florida Clerk of Court cost $20 at the state: $10 for the apostille plus $10 for a certificate of incumbency confirming the clerk. Our $220 price already includes it.
Yes. Choose international return at checkout: a flat $100 per order, tracked international shipping to any address in Nigeria. Shipping inside the U.S. is included.
Apostilles only work between Hague Convention members, and Nigeria is not one. Florida issues an authentication certificate instead; it then goes to the U.S. Department of State and the Nigeria embassy or consulate.
