Quick answer

Chilean minors, and foreign minors living in Chile, need a notarial or consular authorization from the parent who isn't traveling to leave the country, and the Policía de Investigaciones checks it at the border. One Florida apostille is all the U.S. side needs — $220, 5–7 business days.

Our general rule for translations is certified by the translator, notarized by a separate notary and apostilled in Florida, but Chile often needs less or something different.

Chilean minors, and foreign minors living in Chile, need a notarial or consular authorization from the parent who isn't traveling to leave the country, and the Policía de Investigaciones checks it at the border. A parent in Florida has two routes: sign at the Chilean consulate, after which the authorization is legalized at the Foreign Ministry in Chile, or sign before a Florida notary and get the apostille. The child should also carry an original birth certificate naming both parents. For repeat trips, ask about a public deed that covers multiple departures.

A specific letter naming the child, the consenting parent or parents, the accompanying adult, the destination and the travel dates, signed before a Florida notary with a complete notarial certificate (venue, presence or online box, date, ID type, seal). Names must match each passport exactly, and the dates must cover the actual trip.

Draft the letter yourself (Florida law prescribes no form), then sign before any Florida notary or through our online notarization add-on, where each parent can sign separately from wherever they are: $40 for the first document ($10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee) and $20 for each additional document. Notarization is not included in our $220. Many trips need only a notarized letter, so confirm the apostille is actually required.

State fee for this document: $10 — included in our price. Full details on the child travel consent letter apostille page.

Who receives it in Chile — and translation

The Servicio Nacional de Migraciones handles residence applications, which can be filed online from outside Chile. The Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación registers births and marriages abroad and handles posesión efectiva for estates without a will. Foreign judgments, including divorces, need exequatur from the Corte Suprema. The Universidad de Chile revalidates U.S. degrees, and the Servicio de Impuestos Internos issues the RUT that foreign owners and companies need.

Our general rule for translations is certified by the translator, notarized by a separate notary and apostilled in Florida, but Chile often needs less or something different. Migraciones requires an official translation only for documents in a language other than Spanish or English. The Registro Civil instead wants a certified Spanish translation from Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the relevant consulate; the Ministry's service translates the apostilled original and can deliver it online. Translate after the apostille, and only when the receiving office asks.

For work-based residence, Migraciones requires the criminal-record certificate to be issued no more than 60 days before you apply, so order it last and apostille it immediately. For other documents, ask the receiving office; a freshly certified vital record also avoids the pre-2014 signature problem.

What it costs for Chile

$220 per document, $380 for two and $160 each for three or more — the state fee, request form, in-person filing in Tallahassee and FedEx shipping inside the U.S. are included. Shipping the finished apostille to Chile is a flat $100 per order.

Not included: whatever the issuing office charges for the certified copy or certificate, and notarization (online notarization is $40 for the first document — $10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee — and $20 for each additional one).

Common questions

Yes. Chilean consulates describe two routes from abroad: sign at the consulate, or sign before a local notary and add an apostille. For the second route, we file the Florida apostille in 5–7 business days.
No. Airlines and border officers are often satisfied with a notarized letter. You need the apostille when a foreign authority relies on it in a formal procedure, such as a dual-national child leaving that country or a passport or residency application filed abroad.
The parent or parents who are not traveling. If the child travels with neither parent, both sign. A parent with sole custody signs alone and carries the certified custody order.
Yes. Choose international return at checkout: a flat $100 per order, tracked international shipping to any address in Chile. Shipping inside the U.S. is included.
Not on the U.S. side — no embassy or consulate legalization. Chile may still ask for a translation; as a rule it should be certified by the translator, notarized and apostilled too.
