Death Certificate apostille for Dominican Republic.

When a Dominican dies in Florida, the family usually needs the death recorded with the Junta Central Electoral so the civil registry is updated, and then a Florida death certificate for the sucesión: transferring titled property at the Registro de Títulos, closing bank accounts and filing the inheritance tax declaration with the Dirección General de Impuestos Internos. Each step may keep a copy, so order several certified copies signed by the State Registrar and apostille each. Repatriating remains is a separate process run by the funeral home, with its own consular paperwork.

Dominican offices usually want the Spanish translation to carry its own apostille. The translator certifies the translation of the original and its apostille, a separate Florida notary notarizes that certification (the translator can't be the notary), and we apostille the notarized translation as a second document, so an original plus translation is our two-document price of $380. Some Dominican offices may instead want the translation made in the Dominican Republic; ask the office that will receive your file.

Only a certified copy from the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics or a county health department can be apostilled: it carries the State Registrar's signature that the Department of State verifies. Funeral-home copies, photocopies and scans are rejected, and copies certified before 2014 must be replaced with a fresh certified copy (order through VitalChek or the county health department). If the receiving office needs the cause of death, ask for the version that includes it — both versions can be apostilled.
