How a Florida single status affidavit is used in Argentina
When a U.S. citizen marries in Argentina, the Registro Civil can ask for proof that nothing prevents the marriage. Florida doesn't issue a certificate of no marriage, so the usual substitute is a single-status affidavit, sworn before a Florida notary with a complete jurat, apostilled and then translated by a traductor público. If you were married before, the affidavit isn't enough by itself: expect to show the divorce or the death certificate too. Requirements differ between Buenos Aires City and the provinces, so get the list from the office that will celebrate the marriage.
Getting a single status affidavit Florida will apostille
A sworn affidavit with a complete Florida jurat stating that you are not married and are free to marry and, if you were married before, the date, place and court or record that ended that marriage. Names must match your passport, and it must be signed within the window the foreign registry allows.
Use the registry's template if it has one, then swear to it before a Florida notary or through our online notarization add-on: $40 for the first document ($10 notarization fee + $30 technology platform fee) and $20 for each additional document. First confirm that the country accepts a notarized affidavit rather than a consular or government-issued status certificate. Notarization is not included in our $220.
State fee for this document: $10 — included in our price. Full details on the single status affidavit apostille page.
Who receives it in Argentina — and translation
The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones handles residence (applications start online in RaDEX and finish in person). Argentine consulates in the U.S. handle the opción de nacionalidad and can also take poderes. The Registro Civil of each jurisdiction registers foreign records, and in Buenos Aires City foreign divorces and adoptions are registered on an Argentine court's order. Degree revalidation goes to national public universities, and escribanos and courts receive powers of attorney and estate documents.
Our general rule is a translation certified by the translator, notarized by a separate notary and apostilled in Florida, but Argentina instead requires an in-country professional for official filings. Under Law 20.305, foreign-language documents filed with Argentine authorities need a Spanish translation by a registered traductor público, and Migraciones and the Buenos Aires Registro Civil also want the Colegio de Traductores to legalize the translator's signature. Get the Florida apostille first so the traductor público translates the apostille page too.
Argentina doesn't publish one freshness rule for every foreign document. Criminal-record certificates are the most time-sensitive, so order them last and ask Migraciones or the consulate how recent they must be; for vital records, a freshly certified copy avoids the pre-2014 signature problem anyway.
